Abstract

He role of specific bacteria in periodontal disease has been extensively investigated. However, there is evidence that other microorganisms may have some influence in the etiology of this infection. Among these new microorganisms, members of the domain Archaea has been associated with periodontitis. Several studies have observed different levels of prevalence of this domain in subjects with chronic and aggressive periodontitis. However, the prevalence and levels of the main species of Archaea present in the oral cavity, Methanobrevibacter oralis, has been little studied. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence and levels of M.oralis in subjects with chronic periodontitis. Twenty subjects with periodontal health (PH) and 20 subjects with chronic periodontitis (CP) will be selected. Nine subgingival plaque samples will be collected from each subject and all will be individually analyzed for the levels of M. oralis. The samples will be processed and analyzed by quantitative polymerase chain reaction technique. Differences between groups are evaluated using the chi-square and Mann - Whitney test. Statistical significance will be set at 5%.
