Abstract

The intensive use of transgenic crops in the agriculture raises questions about the selection of resistant insects to genetically modified crops, creating a new demand to the scientific research in what concerns agricultural landscapes. One of the most known techniques to manage the resistance is the use of refugee areas, which are regions with no-transgenic crops, located inside the agricultural lands. However, the portion of land destined to be refugee is very discussed. In the current project we aim to develop and apply a mathematical and computational approach to simulate the population dynamics of agricultural pests for different arrangements constituted by a mosaic of agricultural lands that represent different proportions of refugee areas in order to define the one that optimize the insect resistance management in transgenic crops. In a next stage, the model will be validate for a real area. (AU)
