Abstract

This project aims to investigate the circulation and assessment of novels between 1840 and 1870, in Brazil, France, Great Britain and Portugal. It is part of the broader research project "The transatlantic circulation of the printed word", which, under the direction of Márcia Abreu and Jean-Yves Mollier, investigates the social uses concerning novel in Europe and Brazil during the nineteenth century. The research will be oriented by four axis: 1) crossing archives like booksellers' advertising, libraries' and literary societies' indexes and literary critics published in newspapers, we will be able to build an inventory of the novels with the widest circulation in Brazil, France, Portugal and Great Britain between 1840 and 1870. 2) Then, the evaluation criteria for those most circulating novels will be investigated. 3) Further, it will be possible to analyse the differences and oppositions between the criteria of judgement employed in each of this four literary environments. 4) Finally, we intend to historicize the contemporary readings and analyses of those novels, bringing elements that show their complexity up to par, so as to allow the understanding of literary practices observing representations and procedures by many players within the books' market (booksellers, typographers, readers, publishers, writers), in a worldwide production, circulation and consumption network.
