Abstract

Orbital fractures are highly prevalent and represent 40% of all midface fractures. Their treatment is challenging due to the difficulty of anatomic reconstruction. They can be isolated or associated with other facial fractures, resulting in bone defects with a variety of locations, sizes and severity. Those orbital wall defects create changes in the orbital volume and anatomy and result in clinical symptoms, mainly enophthalmos and diplopia. The treatment must necessarily rebuild the orbital anatomy and volume. Titanium mesh is one of the most widely used biomaterials for that task. Computed tomography is the gold standard for radiological examination of the orbital cavity and allows evaluation of the axial, sagittal and coronal planes, orbital volume, shape, location and extent of defects, as well as treatment planning. This study aims to perform tomographic evaluation of orbital volume and ocular position of the 60 patients (30 from UNESP and 30 from the University Hospital of Basel) who had unilateral orbital fractures, involving one or more walls, which were reconstructed with titanium mesh to verify if the original orbital volume was correctly recovered. In addition will be created an orbital model by finite element process for validation of orbital trauma pathophysiology. (AU)
