Abstract

Between the 2000 and 2007 years, 17.407.128,24 m² of lands were closed in Campinas, divided into 50 gated communities. In consonance to these figures, it is possible to presume that a portion part of this city population is choosing to live in the distant and isolated settlements instead of to set in the core center and consolidated urban areas. Many times, this way of habitat, far from the urban core, leads the indiscriminate car use, makes the public spaces underexploited and worthless and stimulate, more and more, the creation of big closed shopping areas. The reclusion in these living areas not only undermine the balanced relationship between the public and private spaces in the traditional cities but also causes, in appearance, a contraction of the public daily life experiences and the physical personal interaction. Besides, it increased the social segregation and the physical separation between the social classes. This research will perceive the investigation of the generation and development processes of the gated community named Alphaville in the Campinas municipality. It has the purpose of comprehend, on one side, the technical foundations of the legal basis for this allotment approval and on the other, the mainly attractions sought by their inhabitants in opting to live in this kind of urban settlement. The research will focus three great aspects: 1 - The administrative and legal conditions settled by the urban legislation, which came to allow the settlement approval; 2 - The technical prescripts and the urbanistic conception afforded by the designer's team of the enterprise as well as the motivations that leaded them in undertake it so far from the urban core of the city; 3 - The main features of the lifestyles and styles of some inhabitants of these settlements, observing the adherence between the pattern undertaken and their expectations. By the methodological aspects, this research set up in the Teresa Pires Caldeira assumptions related in her well-known book: City of walls: crime, segregation and violence in São Paulo, launched, in 2000, by EDUSP. She allows us to know the strength of the residential segregation forms in the last years.
