Abstract

From the twelfth century on, in the region of Catalonia, Spain, the renovation of several monastic edifications according to new architectural and decorative patterns can be observed. The majority of the reformed monasteries existed since the tenth century; the new constructions - reforms or reconstructions of the whole buildings - follow a monastic topography in which the cloister assumes a central role and where there is a profusion of ornamental elements. According to the specialized bibliography on Catalan Romanesque, these buildings can be classified as "ornamental cloisters", in which the diversity of phytomorphic, animal and geometrical elements is large, however, without great narrative cycles. Still according to that literature, this movement in catalonian monastic buildings should be connected to the influence of the Cluniac monastic reform that, when brought to the region, would have boosted not only the reorganization of monastic administration, but also the material renovation of the monasteries, which, from that moment on, would share a sculptural style.Taking as object of study the carved capitals present in some of these monasteries, this research aims to study the relations between the sculpted elements and the social dynamics underway that moment in Catalonia, especially those established with Cluny. For this purpose, we will abandon the traditional notions of style and model and instead will analyze how the medieval images were intrinsically linked to the society on which they took part.
