Abstract

Since the beginning of the brazilian military regime, culture played a key role in the activities of the opposition. The theater, specifically, was a space of important manifestations of resistance, leading to different political projects, promoting and reflecting important debates about the different positions of the left in front of the authoritarian regime. This project aims to contribute to the historiographical study of the theater, relatively little studied by the 1960s and 1970s engaged art historiography, if compared to other topics. We seek to understand what the place of communist dramaturgy in the context of the resistance to the military government and how a political project linked to the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) tradition has appeared in the theater. Our main hypothesis is that, despite the absence of an official cultural policy since the PCB, the theater became the main spokesman of the political project of that party, and its guidelines, such as democratic resistance, frontism cultural and political struggle (in the expense of armed struggle) as binding elements of the theme of the plays of the Marxist-inspired playwrights. We will focus our analysis on four very representative plays of the period both in dramaturgical terms and in political terms: O último carro (1967/1976), by João das Neves; Um grito parado no ar (1973), by Gianfrancesco Guarnieri; Rasga coração (1974/1979), by Oduvaldo Vianna Filho and Gota D'Água (1975), By Paulo Pontes and Chico Buarque.
