Abstract

The purpose of this project is based on the synthesis and characterization of anionic membranes produced by radiation-grafting for anion exchange membrane fuel cell (AEMFC) application. Non-fluorinated, partially fluorinated and totally fluorinated polymers, such as polystyrene (PE), poly-tetrafluorineethylene-co-hexafluorinepropylene (FEP), and poly-ethylene-co-tetrafluorineethylene (ETFE), will be submitted to a grafting process by using styrene-based monomers. The polymer grafting of polymeric membranes will be conducted by simultaneous radiation and pre-radiation processes induced by radiation using 60Co and electron beam sources, respectively. The functionalization to form quaternary ammonium groups will carry out by using different amines, for comparison. The resulting materials will be characterized in terms of composition (structure), ionic conductivity, and chemical and mechanical stabilities and, finally, evaluated as electrolytes in alkaline fuel cell prototypes fed with hydrogen (H2) as fuel and oxygen (O2) as oxidant in the temperature range of 50-80oC.
