Abstract

Despite the downward tendency observed over time, the rate of child labor continues blatantly different among Brazilian states. In this context, the question of this research project is: what are the causes of notable difference in the rate of child labor among Brazilian states in the period of 2001 to 2014? Hence, the main objective of this study is to identify the causes of this alleged difference. Specifically, we seek to: (a) identify the temporal dynamic present in the stochastic process of child labor rate so as to measure the short and long term effects of shocks in possible determinants of child labor such as, for instance, shocks in the proportion of poor families benefitted by the \textit {Bolsa Família} cash transfer program (PBF, in Brazilian acronym), and (b) identify the impact of work fiscalization measures on the rate of child labor. The empirical modeling will be performed by using panel data of Brazilian states. Besides permitting to investigate the causes of heterogeneity in the rate of child labor among states, the use of panel data allows to control for states' specific unobservable factors. Additionally it permits to incorporate time dynamic in child labor rate. Hence, it allows measuring both short and long term effects of shocks in the determinants of child labor. (AU)
