Abstract

The state of São Paulo has an area of 248,196.960 km2 and a population of 41,262,199 with inhabitants distributed over 645 towns IBGE, (2013). Among the Brazilian states, it is the most populous and the largest producer of municipal solid waste (MSW), producing about 39,072 tons each day CETESB, (2015). Many of its municipalities dispose waste inappropriately, causing various environmental and social problems. Two important aspects must be taken into account to assist in the mitigation of impacts caused by the disposal of municipal solid waste, and will be elaborated in this proposed period of exchange in the USA. The first aspect is to measure the vulnerability of places where the MSW is deposited using a spatial environmental impact index in two different areas, one in São Paulo state and other in California state (USA), to compare the results between two countries with different strategies for MSW management. The second part of the study abroad is to develop a model to identify more suitable sites for new landfills in the state of São Paulo, taking into account not only environmental, but also economic and social aspects. With the environmental impact index and the model to identify areas for landfills, it will be possible to help controlling and mitigating the environmental impacts caused by improper disposal of solid waste.
