Abstract

The marine ecosystem is often affected by pollution predominantly originated from human activities, through domestic sewage, industrial and port activities. Among the toxic contaminants, heavy metals stand out, dissolved in water, sediment, and biota accumulated in the food chain. The brown seaweed Sargassum genus is considered an efficient biosorbent of heavy metals, in addition to serving as a shelter and providing protection from predators and from adverse physical conditions to its fauna. Moreover, it can serve as a food source for different species, also being a source of contamination for these. The Amphipoda group has a high abundance and diversity in Sargassum, with Cymadusa filosa as one of the most representative herbivore species. When exposed to contamination by metals these amphipods may differ in survival, fertility, size, and changes in the size of secondary sexual morphological characteristics. This project aims to analyze morphological parameters between Cymadusa filosa populations obtained in areas with different distances from a pollution focus on heavy metals and investigate possible influences on their population dynamics. To do this, samples of Sargassum sp. were collected in the Flamengo Bay, Ubatuba, northern coast of São Paulo to obtain Cymadusa filosa.
