Abstract

Gastrotricha are aquatic macroinvertebrates (less than 1 mm) and a benthonic important components freshwater and marine habitats. Despite the large number of populations in different environments, this taxon is poor know possibly because their small size and fragility of their bodies, which makes its difficult to study. The taxon comprises more than 750 species traditionally divided into two chaetonotida orders (mostly freshwater) and macrodasyida (mostly marine). The genus Stylochaeta (Chaetonotida: Dasydytidae) has only 4 species and all described from Europe. During a meiofauna survey in in the city of Paulinia (SP) many specimens of Stylochaeta were found. Thus, this project aims to carry out the description of this probably species new and construct the first phylogeny hypothesis for the genus. (AU)
