Abstract

Consolidated literature on urban themes and urban issue in Brazil, mostly, has obliterated the study of the specific condition of the black population. Although important exceptions, studies disregard the participation of this social group in the production of urban space, the locations occupied by it and displacements that was subject at the city's modernization process. Thus, it is relevant to urban studies identify black territories and their effective participation in the city's production process. The intent of the research presented here is to build a database of the locations occupied by the black population of the city of São Paulo during the 1920s and 1940s, informed by São Paulo black press. To this end it is proposed to conduct a survey of spatial data from the registry information in the newspaper "O Clarim da Alvorada" and its successor, "Alvorada". Specifically addresses will be cataloged establishments, institutions, events and occurrences which identify the presence of Afro-descendant population in the city of São Paulo during this period, and other information that enhance understanding of the ways and means of using these spaces. Because it is a material produced by a social group, specifically to an audience composed of similar, it is intended that the research allows to infer the perception of blacks themselves on their integration into the urban territory and how they related to the city. From this study, one must understand the intentions and resources that this group used to modify their inclusion and participation in society. The data collected allow the production of a georeferenced map that displays the locations of the Afro-descendant communities, accompanied by information to formulate hypotheses about the participation of the characteristics of this group in production, employment, consolidation and change of urban space. With this work, it is believed to contribute to a deepening of understanding of the problem of production and appropriation of urban space in São Paulo, from an established cut from the point of view of the race.
