Abstract

In recent years, a number of researches to the development of functional foods and substances that promote increased food efficiency and growth rate of fish have been intensified. Among the functional foods, or foods that provide basic nutrition and improved health of fish are probiotics. These elements have the potential to promote health through mechanisms not covered by conventional nutrition. Probiotics are dietary supplements of live microorganisms that benefit the health of the host, through the balance of the intestinal microbiota. This work aimed to select probiotic bacteria for freshwater fish, isolated from the intestine and skin of tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Bacteria, which show positive effects on the adhesion, ability of colonization, and proliferation in mucous material from skin and intestine, survival in the presence of bile and the ability to inhibit pathogenic microorganisms through antimicrobial substances will be selected. In addition, growth performance and immunological test will be carried out with possible probiotic bacteria to confirm its applicability in tilapia aquaculture. After confirm the potential for probiotic bacteria will be held the registration ("Patent") for use of this bacterium as a probiotic for tilapia. (AU)
