Abstract

The upper dental arch in patients with bilateral cross bite usually presents atresic with a cross disability. Rapid maxillary expansion is indicated for these cases during the mixed dentition promoting opening of the sutures and transverse increments in the posterior region of the dental arch and can cause significant periodontal changes. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the clinical periodontal and root effects of rapid maxillary expansion with breaker with occlusal coverage in acrylic, in deciduous and permanent molars. Methods: The study sample will consist of 30 patients with complete cross-bite and bilateral atresia and the upper dental arch. The RME procedure will be performed late in mixed dentition through the expansion apparatus with occlusal coverage acrylic. Will be acquired examining computerized cone beam tomography (i-Cat, Hartsfield, PA, USA) pre-expansion and six months after the expansion at the time of device removal. In CT images, analyze the thickness of the buccal and lingual bone plates, and the level of the buccal bone crest and the buccolingual inclination of the posterior teeth through the Software Mimics and will be the overlap of the initial images and the late molars to check the dental volume analyzing the presence or absence of root resorption. Also it is obtained monthly the visible plaque index (VPI), gingival bleeding index (GBI), probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL) and bleeding on probing (BOP). The pre and post treatment measures will be submitted to the paired t-test and data interfaces of the amendments shall be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) for repeated measures. It will use the 5% level of significance to identify differences between the means.
