Abstract

This proposal aims to understand the relationship between science, politics and subjectivity through the controversies around the right to bodily transformations of sex. The analysis will be made in the knowledge production of medicine, psychology and social sciences in Brazil from 1970 to 2015 and other documents like public policies, internationals handbooks of pathologies, Federal and State Counsel of Medicine, international documents of Human Rights and social movements documents. I believe the mapping of these controversies is a way to investigate: (1) classificatory regulations; (2) power relations established between knowledge and subjects; (3) the geopolitics of global circulation of categories and conventions; (4) disputes and tensions between various scientific fields and the claiming of rights by social movements. Using the data collected in my PhD research, the research will invest in a survey and literature review of theses, dissertations, books and articles. The survey will be conducted both online in virtual scientific journals platforms and database of theses and dissertations, and in loco in Brazilian universities libraries. The proposal aims to correlate this scientific production with discussions around public policies and claim rights of social movements, seeking to build intertextualities and highlight tensions and disputes between the different actors involved in the controversy.
