Abstract

Asthma can be defined as a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways. Probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905 when administered to mice reached adequate population levels in the gastrointestinal tract, reduced bacterial translocation and increased IL-10 production. Preliminary results from our group showed that administration of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905 attenuated asthma-like characteristics in an animal model. However, the mechanisms have not been totally elucidated. Objectives: to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905. Therefore, it will be evaluated: * Serum antibody levels (IgA, IgE, IgG1, IgG2a) due to the administration of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905;* Short chain fatty acids production due to the administration of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905;* The effect of Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905 administration on regulatory T cells. Methods: Balb/c mice will receive Saccharomyces cerevisiae UFMG 905 by gavage for 10 days consecutively. Control group will receive only PBS on the same days. Twenty-four hours after the last challenge, intestine and cecum will be removed and the blood will be collected from heart. Levels of IgA, IgE, IgG1, IgG2a will be measured by ELISA. Short chain fatty acids will be assessed in fecal samples. Regulatory T cells (CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ Tcells) will be evaluated with flow cytometry.
