Abstract

The increase of the fishing and the consequent reduction of shrimp stocks considered most commercially successful, give rise an expansion in the exploitation of other species of shrimp like the Artemesia longinaris. This shrimp has distribution restricted to the western Atlantic, the Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) to Argentina and may be caught from shallow waters up to 30 meters. These being benthic shrimp the trawling can generate several impacts upon the ecosystem. This study aimed compare the population dynamics of A. longinaris in two distinct periods (November / 1988 to October / 1989) and (November / 2008 to October / 2009) in the Fortaleza Bay, located in Ubatuba city, northern coast from Sao Paulo State. The collections were performed monthly from 7 transects during one year in each period using a shrimp-fishing boat equipped with double-rig nets (mesh size 20 mm and 15 mm in the cod end) was used for trawling. After each trawling the shrimps were conditioned in thermal boxes for later identified, counted, measured and classified according to the developmental stage of the gonads, in the laboratory. In each transect water samples were collected to measure the bottom and surface temperature, bottom salinity and sediment to verify content of organic matter and mean of grain size. Data will be analyzed to define distribution patterns spatiotemporal, influences of environmental factors on distribution patterns of individuals, populational structure, sex ratio and recruitment. This study will be able assess conditions of the species, at an interval than twenty years and increase management measures with the objective to preserve natural stocks.
