Abstract

In adult patients, treatment of dental discrepancies or severe crowding often involves premolar extractions. Because the literature suggests an apparent association between age and periodontal support loss, a continuous concern among clinicians in adult patients treatment planning relies on the possibility of these patients presenting also greater amounts of bone loss during orthodontic treatment than adolescent patients, especially in therapies involving anterior teeth retraction. Objectives: Therefore, the aim of this study is to compare the changes in alveolar bone crest height between adolescent and adult patients after extraction orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods: Thirty patients with a mean age of 13 years and 30 patients with a mean age of 27 years with Class I or II malocclusions treated with extractions, matched by sex and treatment protocol will be retrospectively selected to compose the study samples. Changes in the alveolar bone crest height of the maxillary incisors and second premolars will be assessed on periapical and bitewing radiographs, obtained before treatment (T1) and immediately after treatment (T2). Intergroup changes will be compared using t tests, at a significance level of 5%.
