Abstract

Chronicle is time and memory, work's like a record time, is the echo of human life, it pulsate the events of an era. In his journalistic texts, the chronicler Machado de Assis dialogues with many cultures and literatures, among them the Italian culture. In their writing, Italy is inserted in the newspapers of the time, circling several Italian environments, for example, music, politics, literature, theater, painting and history, and, in most often, this Italian atmosphere seems to be tied to the artistic manifestations, particularly the lyric theater. Because it is a dialogue set in a text as chronic, made to the newspaper, the Italian of Machado de Assis chronicler is also bound to a epoch and to your readers. Accordingly, this project aims to analyze how Italian culture crosses the Atlantic and circulates those chronicles throughout of Machado de Assis contribution as a chronicler for the newspapers, starting in 1859 in the magazine O Espelho until 1897 for the column "A Semana" in the Gazeta de Notícias, revealing the Italy of the chronicler, from the concepts of intertextuality and cultural transfers, because is necessary to check how the Italian culture comes to the nineteenth-century Brazil and how it manifests in Machado chronicles, based on allusions and citations contained therein.
