Abstract

The design work of Brazilian architects Paulo Bastos and Abrahão Sanovicz,representatives of the so-called Escola Paulista, is respectfully celebrated in the realm of Modern Brazilian Architecture, but their works do not come to mind within the current architectural debate in Brazil - maybe because there is no major scholarship on the subjects so far, apart a few fine, pioneering research work. There is still risk of the architectural oeuvre of both architects falling into oblivion.In this sense, this research project aims to produce a comparative analysis of the houses designed by each architect for themselves in São Paulo during the 1970s. This comparative analysis takes into account 1) the historical context of the urban growth of São Paulo in the XXth Century, particularly the garden neighbourhoods of City Butantã and City Alto de Pinheiros; 2) the study of both houses as expressions of the Escola Paulista's architectural partii, particularly on the issue of architectural detail design; 3) investigating the house designs through graphic and spatial analysis. These aims will be achieved by means of bibliography and scholarship review of the historical context, the biography and careers of both Sanovicz and Bastos, and the design methods of each architect. The fieldwork for the graphic and spatial analysis will include technical visits to each house.The resulting research will, hopefully, contribute to the ongoing debate regarding the Escola Paulista, its members and their design practices; contribute to a renewed approach to architectural detail design for architects and schools of architecture, and shed new lights to the design works of Sanovicz and Bastos.
