Influence of nonthermal plasma treatment on the bond strength between an ocular prosthesis acrylic resin and a soft lining material

Abstract

The ocular prosthesis mismatch may occur over time, especially in pediatric patients, resulting in the necessity of relining the prosthesis. However, the acrylic resin has poor adhesion to soft lining materials, even with the use of adhesive primers. The nonthermal plasma (NTP) treatment can be used to improve the adhesion between various materials. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the influence of NTP treatment on bond strength between an ocular prosthesis acrylic resin and a soft lining material with or without the use of an adhesive primer. One hundred and sixty samples of N1 color acrylic resin will be prepared (40mm x 10mm x 10mm) and randomly distributed into 4 groups (n = 20), according to the surface treatment: Primer Sofreliner (G1); Plasma (G2); Sofreliner Primer + Plasma (G3); Plasma + Sofreliner Primer (G4). Specimens of G1, G3 and G4 will be subjected to the application of the Sofreliner Primer. Samples of G2, G3 and G4 will be subjected to NTP treatment, with 70% argon and 30% hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO). Then, a soft lining material (Sofreliner) will be interposed between two samples for the formation of the specimens. Half of the specimens will be stored in saline solution for 90 days in a bacteriological incubator (37ºC). The bond strength test will be performed by using a universal testing machine (EMIC DL-3000), with a speed of 5 mm/min. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis will be performed before and after the bond strength test. Data will be submitted to the test of normal-distribution, and appropriate statistical test will be applied.
