Abstract

Sewage sludge is the waste generated in greater quantity in STPs and the final destination is, almost always, landfills. This provision is certainly not the best option for several aspects: a) landfill has deposition costs; b) since 2014 the legislation forced the deposition in specific landfills, that are more expensive and, certainly, more distant from production points; c) the sewage sludge contains high moisture and produces slurry, that must be stored and treated; d) the sewage sludge contains organic matter and nutrients that could be applied in agriculture and forestry as a fertilizer / soil conditioner. However, since 2011, when the CONAMA Resolution 375/2006 came into force, STPs has huge difficulties to follow the tolerance limits for pathogenicity indicators of sludge Class B. A legal alternative found for appropriate disposal of sewage sludge is to frame it as a Class D Organic Compost Fertilizer Product, through the MAPA. The sludge to be mixed with a carbon source, allows a temperature rise and then the mass pasteurizing and the decrease or, possibly, the pathogenic organisms elimination. Therefore, this project aims the viabilization of the biosolids from two types of sewage sludge (activate sludge and Sedimentation Pond) and 3 carbon sources (eucalyptus bark, sugarcane bagasse and rice husk) studying the process composting and the possible elimination of fecal coliforms, Salmonella spp and viable Ascaris spp ova, through elevation of temperature. The experiment will be developed in a composting yard located at SABESPs STP - Botucatu, in Unesp Lageado Experimental Farm. (AU)
