Abstract

The research project includes studies to be part of a PhD thesis which will be developed at the State University of Campinas, under guidance of Prof. Dr. Archimedes Perez Filho, which is linked to the thematic project titled "Spatial and geochronology of surface coverage in marine, fluvial-marine terraces and fluvial terraces in the context of climate fluctuations, associated with episodes of marine Holocene transgression and regression on the Brazilian coast" being analyzed by FAPESP. The overall objective of the work includes the correlation obtained in ages, by absolute dating of materials that cover low fluvial, marine and fluvial-marine terraces present in the lower courses and the mouth of the Ribeira de Iguape river, located in São Paulo coastline, as well and in the lower course and the mouth of the Paraíba do Sul, state of Rio de Janeiro, with Holocene climatic fluctuations to be identified on low terraces of river basins within the continent. Therefore, the hypothesis is founded on the possibility that Holocene climate events identified in river terraces of continental basins can also be identified in the coastal environment, similar to some data related to marine transgressions and regressions recently; and therefore it could be an indicative of climatic pulses regional order. To reach these objectives low terraces will be identified spatially through the orbital and not satellite images and field work analysis. Methodologies used are linked to morphometric analysis, sedimentological studies and absolute dating of surface coverings on terraces by Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL). Finally, it is mentioned that the results of this research, together with other works related to the theme, will enable a greater understanding of geomorphological dynamics, especially as an evidence of Holocene climatic pulses, providing subsidies to mitigate the effects of these climatic oscillations in urbanized areas
