Abstract

The aim of this study is to develop a novel interphase structure between filler particles and resin matrix based on polymer brushes, by using alternative silane agents and oligomers in order to reduce the shrinkage stress that is developed during polymerization and improve the mechanical properties of these materials. Pilot studies will be conducted to determine the silane to cover fillers, associating functional and non-functional agents. Oligomeric chains will be attached at one end to the filler surface to create a transactional area between organic and inorganic phase, i.e. polymer brushes. Modified particles will be characterized including thermogravimetric analysis, gel permeation chromatography, dynamic light scattering and transmission electron microscopy. Experimental composites will be fabricated by mechanical mixing of resin and filler (30 wt% filler loading). Polymerization kinetics and degree of conversion will be analyzed according to the aspects of fillers modification. The results will be qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed following the factors under study and the comparison among groups of relevance for this project will be done. (AU)
