Randomized clinical trial of three materials after partial caries removal in primary teeth

Abstract

The technological advancements enable different alternatives in dentistry. In this sense, minimally invasive treatments avoiding more complex procedures, such as partial caries removal, have been developed. This randomized clinical study aimed to compare, through clinical and radiographic assessments, the use of three pulp capping materials on the remaining dentin after partial caries removal in primary teeth. Primary molars with deep caries will be carefully selected in children aged between 5 and 9 years of age, both genders, and randomly allocated into three groups: Group I - Calcium Hydroxide Cement, Group II - Mineral Trioxide Aggregate and Group III - Portland Cement. The selected teeth will be undergoing treatment only after randomization. None subject will be informed on the treatment type he/she will be submitted to during the study. The capping materials will be placed on the pulp wall, with approximately 1 mm of thickness. Each group will receive the assigned pulp capping material mixed according to the manufacturers' instructions. The restored teeth will be clinically and radiographically evaluated at 6 months. During all the study period, two previously calibrated examiners will carry out the clinical and radiographic assessments by double blinding. After that, the data will be properly analyzed by Chi-square test. A level of significance of 5% will be adopted so that the differences will be considered as statistically significant. (AU)
