Abstract

Previous studies from our research group (FAPESP process number 2012 / 02083-8 and No. 2012 / 02565-2; Prope-UNESP 005/2011) demonstrated in an animal model that endodontic infection has effects on systemic health, as well as changes systemic are capable of modulating the development of endodontic infection (Cintra et al, 2013;. 2014abc). In this sense, atherosclerosis, which has been the subject of intense study in periodontics area still lacks information as to its possible two-way relationship with the development of endodontic infection. Given that the immune mechanism of periodontal disease is similar to the apical periodontitis and the biological pathways that link between chronic periodontal disease and systemic disorders are the same that can bind to chronic apical periodontitis and general health, we believe that of great importance to study this possible bidirectional relationship between apical periodontitis and atherosclerosis. Objective: The objective of this study is to analyze the endodontic infection can influence the levels of triglycerides and cholesterol of normal mice or mice with atherosclerosis. Methods: 40 rats will be used divided into 4 groups of 10 animals each: C - control rats; IE - mice with endodontic infection; AT - mice with atherosclerosis; AT + IE - mice with atherosclerosis and endodontic infection. Atherosclerosis is induced by a amarria performed in the carotid artery. Rats C and IE groups feed with conventional feed. As for the rats of groups with atherosclerosis (AT and AT + IE) to feed a combination of 75% of the conventional feed associated with 20% lard and 5% sugar for 60 days. The endodontic infection is induced by pulp exposure of the first and upper second molars and lower right of each animal side. After 60 postoperative days the animals will be anesthetized again and collecting 5ml of blood will be performed by cardiac puncture. To confirm the presence of periapical lesions, digital radiographic analysis will be performed. It will also be carried out evaluation of dosage levels of triglycerides and cholesterol. Analysis of results: The results of the different tests and the correlation between local and systemic findings will be analyzed by specific statistical tests for each case (p <0.05).
