Abstract

The research is aimed to investigate the coalition strategies of the major Brazilian political parties in elections to the municipal executives of the state of São Paulo, in the elections that took place between the years 2000 and 2012 will be analyzed eleven subtitles, which are: Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), Partido Democrático Trabalhista (PDT), Partido Socialista Brasileiro (PSB), Partido Comunista do Brasil (PC do B), Partido Socialismo e Liberdade (PSOL), Partido do Movimento Democrático (PMDB), Partido da Social Democracia Brasileiro (PSDB), Partido Liberal/ Partido da República (PL/ PR), Partido Trabalhista Brasileiro (PTB), Partido da Frente Liberal/ Democratas (PFL/ DEM) and the Partido Progressista Brasileiro/ Partido Progressista (PPB/ PP). The approach has focused on understanding the influence of the federal level and the state logic (governismo versus oposicionismo) in the formation of the agreements at the municipal level. Its main axis two key questions: what sphere (federal or state) has influence more evident way the strategy of agreements between major associations? The size of the city presents itself as a variable to restrict the adoption of a unified strategy by Brazilian subtitles? To answer these questions will be analyzed 78 cities in the state of São Paulo, and the 25 cities with the lowest number of voters and 53 with more than 100,000 voters, using the quantitative research method in order to compare the influence of base the federal government and the state government, in achieving the electoral arrangements.
