Abstract

This research aims to reflect, based on the key model of the "creative city", about the process of building and managing a city-brand and its consequent impacts on urban policies. Therefore, we intend to recover the discussion on territorial branding, which had its origins in the urban development model that has been called "strategic planning" in the 80s and 90s, in order to identify how and when the discourse of promoting cities began to tangent the first ideas which referred to the concept of "creative city", which, although much due to that earlier model, brings a number of new issues, reaching its peak as reference urban policy between the end of the 90s and the beginning of the XXI century. This research also aims to analyze the continuities and ruptures of this model from the financial crisis of 2008. Thus, it proposes to investigate the importance of "creativity" to the promotion of a city, questioning the role of culture and how its meaning may have changed along with the emerging of these new models of development. With this, it is taken as a case study the city of London, capital of the pioneer country in the implementation of the discourse of "creativity" in its public policies, investigating the economic, social and urban consequences of them allied to the promotion of the city internationally, having as a frame the aftermath of the financial crisis of 2008 and the preparations and implementation of public policies related to the 2012 Olympic Games as an important reference point.
