Abstract

The proposed research seeks to investigate what characterizes the Aristotelian tradition of the commentary on the assumption that this distinctive feature is the philosophical methodology used in order to produce this particular type of text. Thus the thesis that I aim to sustain and prove is that in the case of the Aristotelian tradition, the philosophical appropriation is a matter of method rather than a blind doctrinal trust. The use of the dialectic as a logical device would, then, provide the conditions for the hermeneutical process that involves the construction of a tradition. In order to test this hypothesis, I propose to analyze of the passages in which the commentators of the Aristotelian De Anima apply their hermeneutical tools to the same argument. By doing so, I pretend to dig deeper into the logical devices used by commentators, the type of argument produced by this method, the consequences that derive from them and the philosophical implications that follow from this procedure.
