Abstract

Validation is an important stage of the modeling process. It focuses on verifying if a model is acceptable for its purpose. With this in mind, it is extremely important to validate the computational model developed in the project FAPESP 2015/10640-2. The model consists on a system of cellular automata to study the spatio-temporal dynamics of Spodoptera frugiperda populations in crop mosaics constituted by Bt and non-Bt crops. In the current project, the student intend to work in partnership with the University of Florida and USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) in Gainesville, FL, in order to obtain biological and monitoring data to validate the computational model. The student will spend six months working with Dr. Roberto M. Pereira from the University of Florida and Dr. Robert Meagher from USDA that focus his research on laying the ecological foundation for the area-wide control of S. frugiperda in the state of Florida. During this period, the student will rear S.frugiperda individuals from Florida corn crops in laboratory and work with monitoring data that have been collected by Dr. Meagher research group. Then, in possession of these data, the student will be able to validate the proposed model and complete his PhD thesis. (AU)
