Abstract

This research proposal developed under FAPESP/NERC/Project: Marine ferromanganese deposits - a major resource of E-tech elements (MarineE-tech) has the aim to address socio-economic issues of mining ferromanganese deposits located in the Brazilian outer continental shelf at 40°W and 30°S, in the Rio Grande Rise (RGR). Main objective is the sustainability of a mining venture of a deposit in the outer continental shelf, considering economic and environmental issues. The project will identify and quantify the potential (cumulative) anthropogenic impacts and pressures in the RGR, e.g., pollution and fisheries, as well as and map the (functional) biodiversity, habitat types (geodiversity), ecosystem processes and ecosystem services in the RGR area. In addition, a desktop study based on literature review and in-depth social surveys will checklist deep seabed mining impacts on marine goods and services that will be contextualized within the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment framework. Benefits from preserving marine ecosystem services, in particular in the high seas and deep seabed, as already proposed in the literature, will be compared with the opportunity costs of deep seabed mining to some important sectors of the marine Brazilian economy (mainly fisheries). The project also intends to integrate stakeholders engaged into this activity within the Brazilian government and support the discussion on a Strategic Environmental Management Planning. (AU)
