Cities and rivers on western São Paulo: Rio Tietê and the cities of Pederneiras and Barra Bonita

Abstract

Cities formed in western Sao Paulo during the end of the XIX century and the beginning of the XX century present, even to this day, a homogeneous landscape, not only within the aspect of its natural scenery, but also in the form of occupation and its urban design. It can be observed how a series of cities were implemented near rivers, while others on the divisors spigot of watersheds. One hypothesis to be analyzed is that of the cities implemented along Rio Tietê present a variation in this relationship, since, in all of the cities studied previously, all borders of small streams, bodies of water do not find themselves inserted into the urban scenery. The chosen geographic section for the development of the research is the study of two cities in the state of Sao Paulo, located along the Rio Tietê - with different relations: beach or dam and urban area. The urban space can be categorized as independent variable, determined by its natural and social conditions in which it is performed. It can also be determined as an independent variable, since, it is capable of determining a life style, and change the natural landscape. Considering this variables, it is intended to describe how, in this current era, it is processed the relation between the variables: river and city. The methodological procedure comprises of the survey of the relevant literature to the topic and development of the cities, photographic survey and routes of observation along Rio Tietê in the urban centers as well as in its borders and nearby environments, documentary research in the municipal archives, including legislations, plans and projects, besides the systemization of data collected and the making of maps and charts. These procedures will enable the capacity to describe the relation of interference between the two variables, observing some of the aspects: the case of the permanency, form of occupation, its insertion within the participatory master plans and other municipal legislations and its existing relation with habitants of the city and/or Rio Tietê. The chosen cities are: Pederneiras e Barra Bonita.
