Abstract

The incidence of allergic disorders and autoimmune diseases has increased dramatically in Westernized countries. This increase in disease susceptibility is thought to be the result of decreased microbial exposure during early childhood. The commensal microbiota educates the innate and adaptive immune systems to maintain homeostasis and some alterations in microbial composition (also referred to as dysbiosis) are thought to be associated with increased susceptibility to a multitude of diseases. Macrophages and dendritic cells (DC) are central players in regulating immune responses to gut microbiota and instrumental in shaping mucosal immunity. Eosinophils are another intestinal innate cell type that are found in large numbers in the small intestine. An important role for eosinophil and DC/macrophage interactions has therefore been emerging, encouraging future investigations into cooperative eosinophil-DC interaction. In this context the actual project aims to investigate the dynamic interactions between eosinophils and dendritic cells in response to the intestinal microbiota.
