Electrochemical technologies have proved be an efficient and viable alternative method for the removal pollutants from wastewater. The use of diamond electrode and hydrogen peroxide can be an appropriate to make such technologies clean and according to the principles of green chemistry. This project aims at the development of an electrochemical treatment technique for the treatment of an antibiotic-containing solution. First, antibiotics degradation processes will be carried out in an electrochemical cell bench where several variables are studied as e.g. iron ions in different concentrations, ultraviolet light (lamp) and various concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, using a diamond electrode as working electrode. In a second time is intended to scale up the cell used in the previous step, then it can be used a greater amount of effluent. For the analysis of the efficiency, quantitative parameters, such as high efficiency liquid chromatography, analysis of chemical oxygen demand and total organic carbon will be carried out. Finally, the data obtained in the degradation will be compared to data obtained from the degradation methods used in Brazil. The experiments will be conducted in the Engineering Electrochemical and Environmental Laboratory of the Engineering Chemical Departament at the School of chemical Sciences of the University of Castilla La Mancha, Ciudad Real, Spain. The proposal, is a hot topic today, therefore, excellent papers will be published in journals of high-impact factors. Moreover, the collaboration among different laboratories and researchers from different fields (engineering, analytical chemistry and electrochemistry) will enable a strong consolidation of this collaboration and of this research line in Brazil.
