Abstract The project proposes a period of research at French universities and libraries and contact with local academics during the months of April, May and June 2017. The aims are to: (1) explore the relationships between written erotica and the figure of the prostitute, taking an examination of the etymology of the word pornography as a starting point; (2) examine the main derivations from this relationship in key works of modern European literary eroticism; (3) reflect on the centrality and particularity of these relationships to a specific set of erotic works of European and Brazilian modernism, with special reference to their similarities and differences; (4) write a long paper for publication in a peer-review journal and, later, in a book on the theme. The subject is coherent with the overall tenor of my research, which explores western modern erotica, especially French and Brazilian output at different moments from the 18th Century to the present day. My specific interest at this point in time is the literary representation of the prostitute in brazilian modernism, a subject I have been addressing over the last five years through a CNPq (National Counsel of Technological and Scientific Development) production scholarship. After many years of reading literary and theoretical texts on eroticism, the core question here concerns the lines of intellectual inquiry I have been sharing with Professor Camille Dumoulié, with whom I have collaborated academically on several occasions over more than a decade. Professor Dumoulié will accommodate me at the Centre de recherches Littérature et Poétique Comparées, Université Paris Ouest Nanterre La Défense (Paris 10), where I have been many times as a speaker, examination and viva panelist, and guest lecturer.
