Abstract

Coevolution is the evolutionary process that drives phenotypic changes in interacting species. Although coevolution had been very well studied in the last decades, few studies show empiric evidences for coevolution. Theoretical studies suggest that, in order to understand coevolution, it is necessary to study the coevolutionary mechanisms that causes reciprocal selection, and not only patterns of geographic variation. In this project, we will study the mechanisms for reciprocal selection, using the interaction between drosophilids and Drosophila A virus. Our aim is to study the influence of host's phylogeny on DAV and host fitness. We will investigate the variation in the resistance of 48 species of drosophilids to DAV and the variation of DAV's virulence within different hosts. The resistance will be measured by DAV's viral load, which will be done by real time quantitative PCR after reaction of reverse transcriptase, and the virulence will be measured by flies' mortality and fecundity after DAV infection.
