Abstract

The aim of this project is to understand the relationship between religion and politics at the state level elections in São Paulo between 2002 and 2014. Based on the literature of social cleavages and the sociological approach of voting, the two main objectives are: to identify the characteristics of the contexts that benefit the formation of voting preferences on evangelical politicians; and to understand the impact or the effects of the relationship between religion and politics on the party recruitment dynamics. The two hypotheses that lead this project are: a) political parties use "evangelical machines" as shortcuts for candidate selection; b) the vote on evangelical candidates is linked to contexts of social vulnerability. The research applies quantitative and qualitative methods, based on electoral official data (TSE) and socioeconomic and demographic indicators (IBGE), and personal interviews with party and religious leaders and state deputies.
