The project consists of a molecular phylogenetic approach of the genus Sirodotia associated to the morphological characterization applying currently used criteria, as well as new ones eventually proposed. Two robust hypotheses will be tested: 1) Sirodotia will be confirmed as a monophyletic group within the Batrachospermales and its generic status validated. 2) the species currently recognized within the genus based on morphological criteria will be corroborated by molecular data, whereas new species will be found based on molecular and biogeographical data. To test these hypotheses the following aims will be pursued: 1) to infer the phylogenetic relationships of Sirodotia with other genera within the order, as well the inter-specific limits among species within the genus based on sequences of the rbcL gene and the barcode region of the cox1 gene. 2) to evaluate which morphological characters are phylogenetically informative to the light of new molecular data to be used in the species circumscription to elaborate a revision of the genus.
