Abstract

In the last decade, the debate on climate change combined with the price volatility of fossil fuels have incited the electric vehicle (EV) debate, and, in response, automobile manufacturers' investments in electrically propelled vehicles have rapidly increased. Although EVs are expected to have a significant market share by 2030, particularly in developed countries, the deployment of the required charging infrastructure needs to be done beforehand and in the most cost-effective way. The main objective of the ongoing Ph.D. project associated with this Research Internship Abroad Project (BEPE-DR) is to design a holistic framework for fast charging station (FCS) allocation taking into account not only its technical impacts but also infrastructure requirements, implementation costs and the behavior of EVs (traffic flow through the day, for example) on different network regions (downtown, residential area, shopping malls etc.). This research is proposed to be carried out in Australia, a country with more than 200 charging stations across large urban areas, as it will increase the knowledge of the applicant by keeping him in contact with the research group led by Prof. Ochoa. He is currently affiliated to The University of Melbourne, however, has led projects over the last five years in partnership with utilities in the UK, and among them is the "My Electric Avenue", one of the largest EV trials in the world. During this visit, the applicant will closely interact with researchers and data from high-profile industrial projects which is expected to significantly improve the framework proposed in the associated Ph.D. project and accelerate the professional development of the candidate, both valuable outputs that can benefit research institutions in Sao Paulo.
