Abstract

The mining activity, that has always been important to the economy, presents some environmental aspects, including the generation of waste. In Brazil neglect and lack of supervision on the disposal of mining waste are common. Improperly disposed on the ground, without control or protection, mining waste is source of contamination due to the presence of potentially toxic metals. These metals have toxicity and bioaccumulation property. Thus, it is undeniable the need for technologies that inhibit the free migration of contaminants in porous media. Use of natural materials (clay soils) in the sealing of waste disposal sites due to their high capacity of adsorption of metals and improvement of this material from mixtures with organic reactive material are examples of possible low cost solutions. Therefore, this study aims to characterize a clay residual soil collected in the Ribeira Valley region, to be used as a liner on disposal of mining residues enriched in toxic metals (Pb, Zn, Cu, As, Cd and Cr) and analyze the improvement of their performance when mixed in different proportions with organic reactive materials: peat and compost. Thus, the following tests shall be performed: granulometry, XRD, XRF, CEC, thermal analysis, SEM/EDS, determination of physicochemical parameters, Attemberg limits, MCT classification, Proctor test, permeability, triaxial compression and batch test. The geological and geotechnical characterization facilitates the understanding of the properties of materials and possible interactions that may exist with the contaminant, particularly concerning metals.
