Abstract

Machado de Assis and Giacomo Leopardi are especially recognized, respectively, as a novelist and as a poet, and have been the object of comparative studies for at least fifty years. Our research starts from these results, but looks for the exploration of the literary character of the Machadian and Leopardian prose by means of philosophical relationships relevant to the representations of the human character through manifestations of impulses in works of short extension. Thus, our work searches into the moral dimension and the literary matter in a comparative analysis between the Operette Morali (written from 1824 to 1832 by Giacomo Leopardi) and the Machadian short stories Verba testamentária (from the book Papéis Avulsos, published in 1882), Fulano, O lapso (from Histórias Sem Data, published in 1884), Viver! (from Várias Histórias, published in 1896), Ideias de canário (from Páginas Recolhidas, published in 1899), Evolução (from Relíquias da Casa Velha, published in 1906) and A carteira (published in 1884 and later collected in the section "Outros Contos" of Machado de Assis' Obra Completa). We intend to explore the affinities in the treatment of human reactions in the middle of various situations of emotional demand. We also analyze the equilibrium, sometimes called irony, from the point of view (or narrating voice) in short stories, novellas and dialogues, highlighting the choice of genres. (AU)
