Abstract

The sponge associated microbial communities are significantly diverse, abundant and they are source of immense chemical diversity. Marine sponge bromopyrrole alkaloids present diverse and potent biological activities, and have been exclusively isolated from marine sponges. However, brominated pyrroles are also produced in vitro by marine bacteria. The isolation of such metabolites from bacterial culture media raises the question: are brominated pyrrole alkaloids isolated from sponges produced by these animals or by associated microorganisms? The aim of this project is to isolate and identify aerobic bacteria associated with the sponge Tedania brasiliensis, as well as to characterize the chemical profile of culture media produced by bacteria isolated from the sponge, aiming at to identify the eventual producer(s) microorganism(s) of the brominated pyrrole alkaloids previously isolated from T. brasiliensis, and also other secondary metabolites produced in culture.
