Abstract

The present project was planned in collaboration between a Brazilian research institution and research institutions in Europe for the development of an evaluation/intervention therapeutic joint project in patients with visual impairments caused by lesions in the central portion of the retina, the macular diseases. Visual assessments will be performed using modern psychophysical and electrophysiological protocols, more sensitive than a simple visual acuity measurement, to identify in details the visual functioning and physiological changes in the retina. Tests of color vision and contrast sensitivity will be implemented on a portable device under development by the Vision Laboratory at IPUSP (Thematic FAPESP 2014 / 26818-2 and Regular FAPESP 2016 / 04538-3) in collaboration with the Budapest University of Technology. These tests, along with the electrophysiological evaluation, aim to detail the functional visual losses that compromise the patients' visual acuity. Visual training programs will be performed in pre-selected patients from a database of microperimetry results. These patients are followed up by the Department of Ophthalmology at the Semmelweis University of Budapest. They will be evaluated before and after the visual training. We expect to implement protocols, for clinical assessment and therapeutic intervention, which are able to optimize the functional visual ability of patients with low vision. In addition, we hope to strengthen the relations for scientific projects between these institutions involved in the project that could benefit other areas of knowledge in future projects. (AU)
