Abstract

Mazama species geographic distributions at the Atlantic Forest are based on few historical records and its general association to phytophysiognomies. Current studies on the species' densities shows poor precision and unknown accuracy, thus making it necessary to prospect the Atlantic Forest remaining fragments in search for deer occurrence records and also to estimate deer density in these locations. Determining these species distribution and density is labor intensive since we are dealing with elusive species that are rarely visualized and captured. In order to obtain occurrence records and populations estimates we plan to rely on methods based on detection dogs surveys of fecal samples in protected areas. Fecal samples will undergo DNA extraction and species identification will be performed by PCR/RFLP. Occurrence and density data calculated by the fecal standing crop method will be used to i) model species niches and distributions using the maximum entropy algorithm; ii) estimate the abundance in these forest fragments and test the influence of environmental and anthropic factors on population density by Generalized Lineal Mixed Models; iii) make inferences about Mazama evolutionary history; and iv) guide conservationists efforts.
