Abstract

The aim of this study is to compare the effect of an experimental mouthrinse containing NaF and TiF4 (0.042% NaF + 0.049% TiF4) on the prevention of dental erosion associated or not with abrasion in situ .Fifteen healthy adult volunteers will participate in this crossover and double blind study performed in 3 phases (5 days each, 10 days washout), in which they will wear palatal appliance with 8 samples (4 enamel and 4 dentine samples), 4 samples will be subjected to erosion and 4 to erosion associated with abrasion. The phases will correspond to the following treatments: Phase A: The experimental solution containing 0.042% NaF and 0.049% TiF4 (NaF - 200 ppm F -, TiF4 - 189 ppm Ti+4 and 300 ppm F -, pH 4.4); Phase B: Commercial solution with SnCl2/NaF/AmF (800 ppm Sn+ 2, 500 ppm F-, pH 4.5, Erosion Protection® - GABA, positive control); Phase C: Placebo solution (distilled water, negative control). For that, 180 bovine enamel samples and 180 bovine root dentine samples (4 x 4 mm) will be prepared. All samples will be placed at the same level of the acrylic resin of the palatal appliance. During the in situ phases, volunteers will perform the erosive challenges (0.1% citric acid, pH 2.5) 4 times a day, for 90 s each. For samples submitted to abrasion, they will brush the samples using an electrical toothbrush and dentifrice's slurry (1,100 ppm F, NaF, Colgate) 2 times a day, for 15 s each (30 min after the 1st and the last erosive challenges). Thereafter, the volunteers will insert the appliance into the mouth, rinse 10 ml of the tested solution for 1 min and eliminate the excess. Afterwards, they must stay for at least 30 minutes before removing the appliance from the mouth. Tooth alterations will be evaluated using contact profilometry (um). The data will be submitted to appropriate statistical analysis for comparison among the treatments (p<0.05). (AU)
