Prevention of white spot in orthodontics: comparison of the effetivety between fluoride and xilitol varnishes

Considering the fact that orthodontic braces creates a retentive environment for dental plaque accumulation and complicates the oral cleaning, its presence may increase the risk for dental caries development in these patients. The varnish containing sodium fluoride is widely used in dentistry strategy in order to control dental caries. Recently, a research group from FOB-USP developed a dental varnish containing xylitol, which also showed good results in remineralization of white spot lesions. Therefore, the objective of this study is to evaluate, through a randomized clinical trial, the efficacy of xylitol varnish compared to conventional fluoride varnish on white spot prevention in patients undergoing orthodontic treatment. For this, 60 volunteers aged between 11 and 17 years old, who are under orthodontic treatment, will be selected and divided into 3 groups of 20 individuals according to the varnish to be applied: G1 - placebo varnish, G2 - fluoride varnish and G3 - xylitol varnish. Volunteers will receive two applications of varnish each, one at the first appointment and another after 3 months. The clinical examination using ICDAS index and the surface reading with the QLF system will be performed by two examiners previously calibrated at the first appointment and after 6 months of orthodontic treatment. The ICDAS index will be applied on all teeth at the buccal surfaces. Fluorescence reading will also be done on the buccal surfaces, but only of the teeth 14, 24, 34 and 44, after the removal of the respective brackets. For statistical analyses, it will be checked normality (Kolmogorov-Smirnov test) and homogeneity (Bartlett test) data to determine the appropriate statistical test. The significance will be 5%. (AU)
