Abstract

Ana Maria Ernica, my mother, claims to have kept diaries "since she could read and write." In those diaries, records are kept of her day to day experiences, as well as recipes, prayers on behalf of family members, excerpts from the Catholic Bible, and reports of joys and sorrows brought to her by the storms of life. This project aims to investigate these diaries as a source for creative writing. The challenge will be to translate the narrative of real life experiences into narrative fiction, in order to reshape the memories of my mother in a playscript. Genetic Criticism (through the work of Cecilia Almeida Salles) will be used as a theoretical tool in the analysis of these documents, as well as the epistemology of memory of Ecléa Bosi (specifically as described in "Memória e sociedade: lembrança de velhos") and the research on narrative and experience found in Walter Benjamin and Luis Alberto de Abreu. This research aims a reading of the female subjectivity as if seen through a keyhole in the soul of my own mother. The task of exploring her subjectivity is also a search of self-knowledge. (AU)
