Abstract

Children, either with their families or as part of school trips, are one of the largest groups visiting museums today. Nevertheless, little is known about the contribution of museums to the process of Scientific Literacy (SL) of this audience. Thus, the main objective of this research is to analyze how science museums contribute to the scientific literacy of children in the family context. In addition, we intend to investigate how children, through discursive interactions, appropriate the science and how families contribute to the process of scientific literacy during the visit. Children from seven to eleven years old are considered in this study. Qualitative approach, the research will be conducted in museums of Microbiology of Butantan Institute and Science and Technology of PUCRS, focusing on children aged 7 to 11 years who visit its exhibitions accompanied by family. The data collection instruments include observation, filming, sociocultural questionnaire and interviews. Data analysis will primarily guide the theoretical and methodological tool of Scientific Literacy Indicators. The data will be analyzed individually and then crossed by QSR NVivo 2.0 software, which allows the operation of the analysis and triangulation of qualitative data. Whereas are few investigations that include children and directly express their views and the views, beyond experiences in museums, this study seeks to understand and expand the knowledge of how is the SL process in the interaction between the children and youth and the expository speech and reinforce the field of study in the context of SL in non-formal environment.
