Abstract

We propose to characterize novel single crystals of germanium-based clathrates with respect to their thermoelectric properties. We have synthesized several sets of such samples, which have the general formulae Ba8GayMzGe46-y-z (M = Au, Ag, Cu) and Ba8-xRxGayAgzGe46-y-z (R = La, Ce, Eu). The inclusion of rare earth elements is expected to improve their thermoelectric conversion efficiency, which is very desirable from an applied perspective. The thermoelectric characterization consists of measurements of the quantities that yield the figure of merit of a thermoelectric material: the electrical resistivity, thermal conductivity and Seebeck coefficient. They are to be carried out in the group of Professor Toshiro Takabatake, at the University of Hiroshima, which is one of the leading groups in the area.
